Ant and Wasp Problems Around Evesham Properties

Why decks, mulch beds, and shed eaves around Evesham Township attract ants and wasps — and how licensed treatments protect play areas and outdoor dining.

Evesham Township properties — including Marlton addresses — often combine wood decks, thick mulch, and sheds. That landscape is ideal for pavement ants, carpenter ants, and paper wasps nesting under eaves or play structures.

Ant trails from mulch to kitchens

Mulch against siding holds moisture and ant colonies. Trails then follow foundation cracks into kitchens. Pull mulch back several inches and fix weep-hole or sill gaps where possible.

Which ant is it? The answer changes the fix

Three ants account for most Evesham calls, and they want different things. Pavement ants are small and dark, throw up little craters of soil in driveway and patio joints, and trail along hard edges — a perimeter and a food-source problem. Odorous house ants have a giveaway worth knowing: crush one and it smells faintly of coconut or blue cheese. They nest in wall voids and under slabs, split their colonies when disturbed, and are the reason a spray from the hardware store often makes an indoor trail worse rather than better.

Carpenter ants are the ones to take seriously, because they are a moisture signal as much as an ant problem. They are large and black, most active after dark, and the tell is frass — a small pile that looks like coarse sawdust with insect fragments mixed through it, usually below a window sill, a door frame, a deck ledger or a basement sill plate. Frass means they are excavating damp wood somewhere behind that point. Finding the water is half the job: a leaking gutter seam, a downspout discharging against the foundation, a deck ledger with no flashing, or a bath or dishwasher leak that nobody noticed.

  • Follow a trail rather than killing it — the direction it takes at 9pm tells you where the nest is
  • Check the gutter line and every downspout after rain, since carpenter ants follow the wet wood
  • Look under the deck ledger board and at the flashing above it
  • Sweep window sills and the tops of basement walls for frass before assuming there is no nest
  • Pull mulch, leaf litter and stacked wood back from the foundation, and keep firewood off the ground

Wasps near outdoor living spaces

Paper wasps and yellowjackets favor quiet eaves and grill areas. Do not swat nests overhead without a plan — professional removal reduces sting risk for kids and pets.

Telling them apart matters because the risk is not the same. Paper wasps build an open, downward-facing comb like a small umbrella, under eaves, deck rails, porch ceilings and inside grill covers and mailboxes; the colony is usually a few dozen and they defend only at close range. Yellowjackets conceal the nest — in the ground, in a wall void, under a shed or behind siding — and you often see only a steady stream of traffic at one small opening. They are the most defensive of the three, they sting repeatedly, and a lawnmower or a string trimmer passing over a ground nest is how most stings around here actually happen. Bald-faced hornets build the gray, papery, football-shaped nest hanging in a tree or under a soffit.

Late summer into early fall is the worst stretch. Colonies are at their largest, their natural food is running out, and that is when yellowjackets start showing up at drinks, trash cans and outdoor tables and behaving aggressively about it. Cover food and drinks outdoors, keep can lids closed and rinse recycling, and check the ground before mowing an area you have not walked recently.

  • Do not seal the entrance to a nest in a wall void — blocked wasps commonly come through into the living space instead
  • Do not spray a ground nest at dusk while holding a flashlight; they orient toward the light and it is pointed at you
  • Do not knock down an active nest from a ladder — the ladder, not the nest, is what causes the serious injury
  • Never treat a nest yourself if anyone in the household has a known sting reaction
  • An unreachable nest, a nest inside a structure, or a nest over an entrance or play area is a call, not a project
