New Jersey summers are made for backyard barbecues, pool days, and evening gatherings. But mosquitoes can turn your outdoor paradise into an itchy, miserable experience. The good news is that you can dramatically reduce mosquito populations around your home using safe, eco-friendly methods that protect your children, pets, and beneficial pollinators.

Eliminate Standing Water First
Mosquitoes need standing water to breed. A single female can lay hundreds of eggs in just a bottle cap of water. The most effective prevention step you can take is to eliminate all standing water sources around your property:
- Empty and scrub birdbaths, flower pots, and pet water bowls at least once a week
- Clean clogged gutters and downspouts so water flows freely
- Turn over or store items that can collect rainwater — buckets, toys, wheelbarrows
- Keep swimming pools and hot tubs chlorinated and covered when not in use
- Fill in low spots in your lawn that collect water after rain
- Change water in wading pools and fountains at least weekly
Use Natural Bti Larvicides
Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that kills mosquito larvae in water. It is used in water features and rain barrels precisely because it is selective rather than broad-spectrum, and it is applied according to the product label for the site being treated. Bti dunks and granules can be placed in water features, rain barrels, and other standing water sources you can't eliminate. Bti only affects mosquito and black fly larvae — nothing else.
Create A Mosquito-Unfriendly Landscape
Strategic landscaping can make your yard less attractive to mosquitoes. Keep your lawn mowed short, trim shrubs and hedges to improve airflow, and remove leaf litter where mosquitoes rest during the day. Consider planting mosquito-repelling plants like citronella grass, lavender, marigolds, and rosemary in patio areas.
Use Outdoor Fans
Mosquitoes are weak flyers — they can't navigate in air currents stronger than a light breeze. Installing outdoor fans on your patio or deck creates a wind barrier that mosquitoes simply can't fly through. This is one of the simplest, most effective, and chemical-free ways to enjoy mosquito-free outdoor dining.
Professional Seasonal Protection
For properties near wetlands, woods, or waterways — common throughout New Jersey — professional seasonal mosquito management provides the most reliable protection. At Fantwin Eco Pest Control, our Category 8B certified mosquito program uses Bti larvicides for breeding source control and targeted barrier treatments around outdoor living areas. We follow the product label on re-entry, which normally means keeping children and pets off a treated area until it is dry, and barrier treatments are timed and placed to avoid blooming plants where bees and butterflies forage.
Our seasonal program runs April through October with monthly treatments. Properties near wetlands may benefit from bi-weekly service during peak season. Call 908-844-8650 to schedule your property assessment before mosquito season peaks.
