New Jersey consistently ranks among the top states in the country for Lyme disease cases. With our dense deer population, extensive wooded areas, and suburban wildlife corridors, ticks are a year-round health threat for NJ families. Understanding how to protect your yard and family from ticks is essential for enjoying the outdoors safely.

Why NJ Is A High-Risk State For Ticks

New Jersey's landscape is ideal for ticks. Our state has abundant white-tailed deer populations, extensive forest fragments, and suburban yards that border wooded areas — all of which support tick life cycles. The blacklegged tick (deer tick), which carries Lyme disease, is found throughout NJ. The American dog tick and lone star tick are also common and can transmit other diseases.

Tick season in NJ runs from April through November, with peak activity in May through August. However, ticks can be active any time temperatures are above 40°F — which in NJ means nearly year-round.

Diseases Carried By NJ Ticks

  • Lyme disease — the most common tick-borne illness in NJ, causing rash, fever, fatigue, and joint pain
  • Anaplasmosis — flu-like symptoms including fever, headache, and muscle aches
  • Babesiosis — a malaria-like illness that can be severe in elderly or immunocompromised individuals
  • Ehrlichiosis — fever, headache, and fatigue; can be serious if untreated
  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever — though less common in NJ, can be life-threatening

How To Make Your Yard Tick-Unfriendly

The most effective tick prevention starts with landscape management. Ticks thrive in tall grass, leaf litter, and shaded, humid areas. Here's how to make your property less hospitable to ticks:

  • Keep your lawn mowed short — ticks avoid short grass
  • Remove leaf litter and clear tall brush from around your home and lawn edges
  • Create a 3-foot wide barrier of wood chips or gravel between your lawn and wooded areas
  • Keep playground equipment, decks, and patios away from yard edges and trees
  • Trim trees and shrubs to allow more sunlight into your yard — ticks prefer shade
  • Remove plants that attract deer, or install deer fencing if feasible
  • Keep firewood neatly stacked in a dry area, away from your home

Personal Protection When Outdoors

Even with a well-managed yard, you should take personal precautions when spending time outdoors, especially in or near wooded areas:

  • Wear light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to spot
  • Tuck pants into socks and wear long sleeves in wooded areas
  • Use EPA-registered tick repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus
  • Treat clothing and gear with permethrin — it remains effective through multiple washes
  • Conduct a full-body tick check after outdoor activities — check scalp, behind ears, armpits, groin, and behind knees
  • Shower within 2 hours of coming indoors to wash off unattached ticks
  • Put outdoor clothing in the dryer on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks

Professional Yard Treatment

For properties near wooded areas or with high tick pressure, professional yard treatment provides the most reliable protection. At Fantwin Eco Pest Control, our tick management program includes targeted treatment of lawn edges, mulch beds, and shaded areas where ticks quest for hosts. We also apply perimeter barriers at the property edge to stop ticks from migrating in from surrounding areas.

We follow the product label on re-entry: keep pets and children off a treated area until it is dry, typically 30-60 minutes. We recommend monthly applications from April through November for the best protection during peak tick season. Combined with landscape management and personal protection, treatment is aimed at the shaded, leaf-littered edges where ticks actually quest — how much it reduces tick pressure depends on the property, the habitat next door, and how much of the yard can be treated.

Don't risk Lyme disease. Call 908-844-8650 to schedule your tick management program before peak season.
